John Thurloe

John Thurloe was Oliver Cromwell’s secretary of state and the organiser of an extensive intelligence and postal-surveillance network.

Thurloe directed cryptography, informants and foreign intelligence during the Protectorate and remained a repository of sensitive knowledge after the Restoration. His role in An Instance of the Fingerpost connects the Oxford murder inquiry with unresolved Civil War conspiracies and state surveillance.
