John Scobell was a formerly enslaved Black man recruited by Allan Pinkerton for Union intelligence work during the American Civil War. Operating in Virginia from 1861 into 1862, he adopted disguises and used the assumptions of white Confederates to move, listen and carry information.
Pinkerton’s later account connected Scobell with a clandestine network of Black informants described as the Legal Loyal League. The surviving record is fragmentary and filtered through Pinkerton, so modern narratives must distinguish Scobell’s documented service from embellished operations and invented personal detail.
