John Samuel Swire

John Samuel Swire was a British merchant and businessman who transformed the family firm John Swire & Sons into a major international trading enterprise in the nineteenth century. Building on his father’s Liverpool business, he expanded into China, where Butterfield & Swire and the China Navigation Company established commercial and shipping networks that became the foundation of the modern Swire Group.

After inheriting the business founded by his father, Swire expanded overseas and established operations in China. Butterfield & Swire opened in Shanghai in 1866 and Hong Kong in 1870, while the China Navigation Company developed steamship services along the China coast and the Yangtze. These ventures laid the foundations of the modern Swire Group.
