John Frost

John Dutton Frost was a British Army officer who became one of the early commanders of Britain’s airborne forces. In February 1942, as a major, he led the parachute company dropped near Bruneval in occupied France during Operation Biting, the raid mounted to seize components of a German Würzburg radar installation.
The successful raid became an important demonstration of airborne raiding and gave British scientists valuable information about German radar. Frost later became famous for commanding the force that held the Arnhem road bridge in 1944. Max Hastings’s Operation Biting examines his role in the 1942 assault as documented military history.
