John Cabot

c. 1450–c. 1499

John Cabot was an Italian navigator, usually identified with Giovanni Caboto, who obtained letters patent from Henry VII of England for westward Atlantic exploration. Sailing from Bristol in 1497 aboard the Matthew , he reached the coast of North America, the first documented European voyage there since the medieval Norse expeditions.

Cabot secured letters patent from Henry VII and sailed west from Bristol in 1497, reaching land in the North Atlantic that was probably part of Newfoundland or Labrador. His voyage provided England with an early claim to territories across the Atlantic. A further expedition left in 1498, but the surviving evidence is fragmentary and Cabot's own fate after that voyage remains uncertain.

David Boyle’s Toward the Setting Sun tells the intertwined story of Christopher Columbus, John Cabot and Amerigo Vespucci during the first great burst of Atlantic exploration in the 1490s.
