John C. Pemberton was a Pennsylvania-born United States Army officer who became a Confederate lieutenant general and commanded the defence of Vicksburg in 1863.
A West Point graduate and veteran of the Mexican–American War, Pemberton resigned from the United States Army in 1861 and entered Confederate service. Jefferson Davis appointed him to command Mississippi and eastern Louisiana. His army was isolated after Ulysses S. Grant crossed the Mississippi, defeated Confederate forces in a series of manoeuvre battles and invested Vicksburg. Pemberton surrendered the city and about thirty thousand troops on 4 July 1863.
