Jean Joseph Amable Humbert

Jean Joseph Amable Humbert was the French general who commanded the expedition to Ireland in 1798.
Humbert landed at Killala with a small French force, joined Irish rebels and defeated a larger British force at Castlebar. His army was surrounded and compelled to surrender at Ballinamuck, ending the most substantial French intervention in the rebellion. Thomas Pakenham’s histories place this figure within the political and military events covered by the relevant book.
