Jan Smuts
1870–1950
Jan Smuts was a South African lawyer, Boer commander and statesman who served with the Transvaal forces during the Second Boer War.
Smuts helped organise the Transvaal war effort and led a long commando raid into the Cape Colony. After the peace he became a leading architect of South African union and later served twice as prime minister. Thomas Pakenham’s histories place this figure within the political and military events covered by the relevant book.
