James II was king of Scots from 1437 until 1460 and inherited the throne as a child after his father’s assassination. His reign was dominated by the struggle to reduce the power of the Black Douglas family and strengthen royal authority.
James personally killed William Douglas, 8th Earl of Douglas, during a confrontation at Stirling in 1452. He later died when a cannon exploded during the siege of Roxburgh Castle.
