James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas

James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas, was a powerful Scottish magnate known as James the Gross. He inherited the leadership of the Black Douglas family after the deaths of his young kinsmen at the Black Dinner of 1440.

His vast estates and influence made the Douglas affinity a near-rival to royal power during the minority of James II. The tension he helped consolidate would erupt more violently under his sons.

Nigel Tranter’s Black Douglas opens with the death of James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas, whose enormous estates and armed following pass to his young son William. That inheritance immediately sharpens the confrontation between the Black Douglas affinity and the insecure Stewart monarchy under James II. James’s legacy therefore drives the novel even after his death: the scale of power he consolidated is precisely what makes his successor both formidable and vulnerable.
