Howard Triest
1923–2016
Howard Triest was born in Munich in 1923 and escaped Nazi Germany for the United States while still a teenager. He later returned to Europe in the US Army, served in military intelligence and became an interpreter at Nuremberg, where his knowledge of German brought him into daily contact with senior Nazi prisoners and witnesses.
Triest interpreted for psychiatrists Douglas Kelley and Leon Goldensohn while the surviving Nazi leaders awaited trial. His parents had been murdered at Auschwitz, giving his work an intensely personal dimension. Helen Fry’s Nuremberg: The Translator’s Tale is a nonfiction account based on research and interviews with Triest and his family.
