Henry Pulleine
1838–1879
Henry Burmester Pulleine was a British Army officer of the 24th Regiment of Foot. During the invasion of Zululand in January 1879 he was left in command of the main British camp at Isandlwana when Lord Chelmsford took a large portion of the column away in search of the Zulu army.
On 22 January the main Zulu force attacked the camp and overwhelmed the British and colonial troops after prolonged fighting. Pulleine was killed in the battle. His decisions, the command relationship with Anthony Durnford and the failure of the camp have been central questions in the historiography of Isandlwana, including Ian Knight’s detailed reconstructions.
