Henry Harmon Spalding

Henry Harmon Spalding was an American Presbyterian missionary who worked among the Nez Perce in the Pacific Northwest from the 1830s. Travelling west with his wife Eliza and the Whitman party, he established the Lapwai mission, promoted farming and schooling, and helped develop printed materials in the Nez Perce language while participating in the contentious expansion of American missionary settlement.

In Jane Kirkpatrick’s The Memory Weaver, Eliza Spalding Warren survived captivity after the 1847 attack on the Whitman mission, but adulthood has not freed her from memories formed as a frightened child.
