Georges Braque

Georges Braque trained as a decorative painter before moving into the Parisian avant-garde. His encounter with the work of Cézanne and his close collaboration with Pablo Picasso led to the development of Cubism, including experiments with fractured perspective, muted colour and collage.

After serving and being wounded in the First World War, Braque resumed his career and continued developing still lifes, interiors and more monumental forms. Although Picasso became the more famous public figure, Braque remained a major modern artist whose work was fundamental to the transformation of European painting in the early twentieth century.
