Gaiseric
c. 389–477
Gaiseric became king of the Vandals and Alans in 428 and led them from Hispania into Roman North Africa. His forces captured Carthage in 439, creating a kingdom that controlled some of the western Mediterranean’s richest provinces and developed a fleet capable of challenging Roman naval power.
He exploited the political instability of the Western Roman Empire, sacked Rome in 455 and defeated the enormous eastern Roman expedition sent against him at Cape Bon in 468. Ian Hughes’s Gaiseric: The Vandal Who Destroyed Rome reconstructs his military career, diplomacy and state-building while assessing the scale of the threat his kingdom posed to imperial survival.
