Eugene of Savoy
1663–1736
Eugene of Savoy was born in Paris in 1663 into the Savoy-Carignano branch of the House of Savoy. After Louis XIV refused him a French military career, Eugene entered Habsburg service and rose rapidly through campaigns against the Ottoman Empire and France. His victories and political influence made him one of the Holy Roman Empire’s foremost soldiers and statesmen.
During the War of the Spanish Succession Eugene worked closely with John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough. Their cooperation was decisive in the 1704 campaign that culminated in the Allied victory at Blenheim, which checked Franco-Bavarian pressure on Vienna and altered the course of the war. Charles Spencer’s Blenheim places Eugene alongside Marlborough as one of the two commanders at the centre of the campaign.
