Elizabeth Bunyan

d. 1691

Elizabeth married the widowed John Bunyan in 1659 and entered a household with four children from his first marriage. Soon afterwards he was arrested for unauthorised preaching, leaving her to sustain the family while pregnant and with limited resources.

She appeared before judges, including Chief Justice Matthew Hale, to argue for Bunyan’s release, but without success. She outlived him and died in 1691. The surviving record preserves her courage in public petitions but gives little secure information about her birth, family name or private life.
