Donald Maclean
1913–1983
Donald Duart Maclean was a British diplomat who secretly worked for Soviet intelligence for much of his Foreign Office career. His postings gave him access to British and Allied diplomatic material, including sensitive information concerning wartime and early Cold War policy. He became one of the most valuable members of the network later known as the Cambridge Five.
Facing growing suspicion in 1951, Maclean fled Britain with Guy Burgess and spent the rest of his life in the Soviet Union. Antonia Senior’s Stalin’s Apostles places his espionage within the political settlement of post-war Europe and the growth of Soviet power. The book is nonfiction and treats Maclean under his documented historical identity.
