D. H. Lawrence

David Herbert Lawrence grew up in a Nottinghamshire mining community and drew on that environment in works including Sons and Lovers. His novels, stories, poems, travel writing and criticism explored emotional and physical life in opposition to industrial discipline and conventional morality.

Books such as The Rainbow, Women in Love and Lady Chatterley’s Lover faced censorship and controversy. Lawrence spent much of his later life outside Britain, and his changing reputation reflects wider debates about modernism, sexuality and artistic freedom.
