Confucius was a Chinese teacher and thinker of the late Spring and Autumn period whose teachings became foundational to East Asian political and ethical traditions. The sayings attributed to him emphasise learning, ritual, moral cultivation, family obligation and government by virtuous example, themes later developed by generations of Confucian scholars.
