Claude Paschal Maistre was a French-born Catholic priest in New Orleans who became known for abolitionist views and ministry among free and enslaved Black residents. His position brought him into conflict with ecclesiastical authorities in a church divided over slavery and political loyalty.
Maistre officiated at André Cailloux’s funeral in July 1863, when a large procession transformed mourning into a public statement about Black Union service. Accounts of his activism are documented, but fiction may compress disputes and assign him private conversations that cannot be verified.
