Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu
1933–2011
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was a Nigerian military officer who led the secessionist Republic of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War.
As military governor of the Eastern Region, Ojukwu declared Biafran independence in May 1967 and directed the secessionist state throughout the war. He became the principal political and military symbol of the Biafran cause. Chinua Achebe’s There Was a Country discusses this figure within the history and memory of the Biafran conflict.
