Christian I was king of Denmark from 1448, Norway from 1450 and Sweden during part of the 1450s and 1460s. He founded the Oldenburg dynasty, which would rule Denmark for centuries.
His reign was dominated by efforts to maintain the Kalmar Union and by bargaining with powerful nobles and regional councils. In 1460 he was also chosen as ruler of Schleswig and Holstein, linking the Danish crown to a difficult German territorial inheritance.
