Charlotte Canning
1817–1861
Charlotte Canning, born Charlotte Stuart, married Charles Canning in 1835 and accompanied him to India when he became Governor-General in 1856. A skilled amateur artist and diarist, she travelled widely, producing watercolours and detailed written observations of landscapes, buildings and social life.
Her years in India coincided with the uprising of 1857 and the transfer of rule from the East India Company to the Crown. She assisted survivors, travelled with her husband during the unsettled aftermath and became the first vicereine when Canning was made Viceroy. She died of malaria in Calcutta in 1861.
