Charlotte Brontë
1816–1855
Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist and poet raised at Haworth in Yorkshire. With her siblings she created elaborate imaginary worlds as a child, later working as a teacher and governess and studying in Brussels before returning to the family home.
Writing initially as Currer Bell, she achieved immediate success with Jane Eyre in 1847 and later published Shirley and Villette. After the deaths of Branwell, Emily and Anne in quick succession she remained the surviving literary member of the family until her own death in 1855.
