Historical person

Charlie Erswell

1923–2021

Charlie Erswell was born in 1923 and joined the Royal Navy in December 1941. Serving aboard the destroyers HMS Milne and HMS Savage, he took part in the Arctic Convoys carrying supplies to the Soviet Union and also saw service connected with Operation Torch, D-Day and the liberation of Norway. The Arctic voyages remained the central experience of his wartime service.

Late in life Erswell worked with John R. McKay to record his memories in Surviving the Arctic Convoys, published by Pen & Sword in 2021. The book presents Erswell as the historical witness at its centre rather than as a fictional character. He died in Wakefield on 19 October 2021, aged ninety-seven, after seeing the memoir published.
