Charles Fleetwood was a Parliamentarian army officer and politician who served in the Civil Wars and later became Lord Deputy of Ireland. In 1652 he married Bridget Cromwell, widow of Henry Ireton and daughter of Oliver Cromwell, bringing him into the Protector’s immediate family.
Fleetwood remained an important military figure during the Commonwealth and Protectorate and later participated in the political struggles that followed Oliver Cromwell’s death. Miranda Malins includes him in the historical world surrounding Bridget in The Rebel Daughter; documented offices and relationships are historical, while private interactions are fictionalised.
