Carrie Adell Strahorn

Carrie Adell Strahorn was an American writer and traveller whose life was closely tied to the railroad expansion and settlement promotion of the late nineteenth-century West. After marrying railroad publicist and promoter Robert E. Strahorn in 1877, she accompanied him on extensive journeys through the western territories and states.

Strahorn recorded those experiences in diaries, articles and in her 1911 memoir Fifteen Thousand Miles by Stage , which describes travel, frontier communities and the growth of towns along developing transportation routes. Her writing provides a distinctive woman’s perspective on western boosterism and mobility during the period.

In Jane Kirkpatrick’s Everything She Didn’t Say, Carrie Strahorn’s published memoir celebrated twenty-five years of travel with her husband Robert, a railroad promoter who helped advertise and develop the American West.
