Anthony Blunt
1907–1983
Anthony Frederick Blunt was a British art historian who also worked for Soviet intelligence. During the Second World War he served in MI5, giving him access to classified intelligence that he passed to Soviet handlers. Alongside his secret work, he built a distinguished public career as an art historian and Surveyor of the King’s, later Queen’s, Pictures.
Blunt confessed his espionage privately in 1964 in return for immunity, but his role became public in 1979 and he was stripped of his knighthood. Antonia Senior’s Stalin’s Apostles treats him as one of the Cambridge Five and examines the damage caused by the group’s access to British state secrets. The book is nonfiction.
