Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun

Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun was a Scottish writer, landowner and political thinker who opposed royal absolutism and the incorporating Union of 1707. He argued for constitutional restraints, civic virtue and the protection of Scotland’s political independence.

Fletcher’s speeches and pamphlets made him one of the most distinctive voices in late-seventeenth- and early-eighteenth-century Scottish political thought. His life connects debates over union, sovereignty, militia service and the balance between landed power and central government.
