Alfred the Great
849–899
Alfred the Great was king of Wessex from 871 to 899 and the leading Anglo-Saxon ruler in resistance to Viking conquest. His military reorganisation, fortified burhs, legal programme and promotion of learning helped preserve Wessex and laid foundations later rulers used in the political unification of England.
