Airey Neave
1916–1979
Airey Neave was a British Army officer who became the first British officer to escape successfully from Colditz Castle. After returning to Britain he joined MI9, the military intelligence organisation responsible for escape and evasion, where his own experience as a prisoner gave him direct insight into the problems faced by Allied servicemen trying to return from occupied Europe.
Neave later served at the Nuremberg trials and entered Parliament after the war. Helen Fry’s MI9 treats him as one of the important figures in the organisation’s operational history. This record concerns his documented military and political career rather than any fictional reconstruction.
