During the nineteenth century, Tyneside and County Durham became major centres of coal mining, shipbuilding, engineering, glassmaking and iron production. Industrial expansion drew workers into Newcastle, Gateshead, Jarrow, South Shields and mining settlements whose economies depended on dangerous manual labour and fluctuating demand.
Wealth generated by mines, shipyards and factories created powerful employers and substantial middle-class households, while many labouring families lived with insecure wages, overcrowding and industrial injury. Domestic service offered another large field of employment, particularly for young women, but reinforced the social distance between servants and those who employed them.
