The Battle of Sluys was fought on 24 June 1340 near the Flemish port of Sluys during the opening phase of the Hundred Years’ War. Edward III led an English fleet against French ships assembled in the Zwin estuary, where the confined anchorage turned the action into a series of close boarding fights.
The English victory destroyed or captured much of the opposing fleet and reduced the immediate threat to cross-Channel communications. It gave Edward greater freedom to move forces between England and the Continent and became the principal naval success behind the early English campaigns of the war.
