20 October 1097–28 June 1098 CE
The Siege of Antioch was one of the decisive and most punishing stages of the First Crusade. The city’s extensive walls and strong position prevented a quick assault, forcing the crusader army to maintain a loose blockade through winter while food shortages, disease, desertion and rivalry among commanders weakened the expedition.
Antioch was entered in June 1098 after contact was made with a guard inside the walls. Within days the crusaders were themselves surrounded by Kerbogha of Mosul’s relief army. Their eventual victory transformed a desperate occupation into a major strategic success and allowed Bohemond of Taranto to establish the Principality of Antioch.
As a child of the First Crusade, Antioch shows the campaign shifting from pilgrimage into conquest and territorial rule. Fiction set here can examine starvation, faith, disputed visions, military leadership and the growing conflict between collective vows and individual ambitions.
