Viking Attacks on Paris and West Francia

845–886 CE

Viking fleets repeatedly entered the Seine and attacked settlements in West Francia during the ninth century. Paris was raided or threatened several times as Scandinavian leaders sought plunder, tribute and strategic bases.

Charles the Bald and other Carolingian rulers responded with payments, fortifications, military levies and negotiated settlements. The attacks exposed the fragmentation of royal power and encouraged the rise of regional defenders.
