Sarah Scarse grows up within the workhouse system of St Giles and St George, where the brutal Triggs uses authority to punish those without outside protection. An opportunity connected to a sugar-mill owner appears to offer escape, but Sarah’s past remains a source of danger.
Outside the institution, she discovers that employment and charity can conceal new forms of control. Sarah must expose what happened in the workhouse and resist those who would return her to dependency before she can establish a secure life of her own.
