The Tyrant’s Shadow

England, 1652. The monarchy has been abolished but the political settlement remains unstable, with Parliament, army officers and radical religious movements competing to define the new Commonwealth. Patience Johnson believes marriage to the preacher Sidrach Simmonds will give her a place in the godly transformation of England, while her brother Will serves as a lawyer close to Oliver Cromwell and tries to rebuild his life after the death of his wife.

The return of the Royalist Sam Challoner from exile forces both siblings to reconsider loyalties that once seemed absolute. Senior uses the same extended Challoner family introduced in Treason’s Daughter, but the novel is published as a standalone rather than as part of a formal series. Oliver Cromwell appears under his historical identity; the principal family characters, private dialogue and central intrigue are fictional reconstruction.
