The Sixth Shotgun

by Louis L’Amour

First published 2005

4.3(4,970)

The Sixth Shotgun brings together two Louis L’Amour western stories in their earlier forms. The title story centres on a stagecoach robbery and the uncertain workings of frontier justice, where witnesses, gunmen and local authority must determine what really happened before violence settles the matter.

The volume also includes The Rider of the Ruby Hills, a range-war story about contested land and the men prepared to fight for control of it. Both works use isolated settlements, weak institutions and personal reputation to create situations in which law exists, but cannot always arrive quickly enough to prevent armed conflict.
