Literary critic Humphrey Van Weyden is rescued after a ferry disaster by the sealing schooner Ghost. Its captain, Wolf Larsen, refuses to put him ashore and forces the inexperienced passenger into the labour and violence of a North Pacific voyage governed by the captain's strength and materialist philosophy.
Mutiny, rivalry with another sealing ship and the rescue of writer Maud Brewster alter the balance aboard the Ghost. Humphrey must learn practical courage without accepting Larsen's belief that power alone gives life meaning, making the maritime adventure a conflict between physical domination, moral choice and the instinct to survive.
