The Anatomy of the Zulu Army examines how the military system of the Zulu kingdom developed from the age of Shaka through the reigns of Dingane, Mpande and Cetshwayo. Ian Knight explains the amabutho age-regiment system, recruitment, royal authority, military settlements, weapons, shields, dress and the social obligations that connected military service to the wider structure of the kingdom.

The book also considers tactics, campaign organisation, ritual and the changing use of firearms before the confrontation with Britain in 1879. Rather than treating the Zulu army as a permanent professional force, Knight presents it as mobilised manpower embedded in Zulu political and social life. The study provides the institutional background needed to understand both the rise of the kingdom and the army that fought at Isandlwana.
