Spears of Clontarf
Set in Ireland in 1014, Spears of Clontarf returns to the climactic battle fought outside Dublin between the forces of Brian Boru and a coalition that included Viking allies. Howard treats the material as a hard-driven historical adventure, following the violence, confusion and shifting loyalties of a battlefield that later fed into his story The Grey God Passes.
Shield-wall fighting, personal courage and the collapse of old political arrangements place the action firmly within the Norse-Gaelic world of early medieval Ireland.
Clontarf's later reputation as a simple Irish-versus-Viking battle hides a more complicated coalition. Norse-Gaelic Dublin, regional Irish kings and Brian's supporters all pursue overlapping political aims, and Viking identity does not determine allegiance by itself. Howard's adventure uses that mixed battlefield to evoke a world in which dynastic rivalry and maritime connections matter as much as ethnic labels.
