Her new butler, John Pembroke, is secretly investigating her powerful mentor for a fraud capable of destabilizing the wider economy, forcing Reina to choose between personal loyalty and the depositors who trust her.
The novel is rooted in Victorian women’s campaigns for professional and financial independence, the growth of modern banking and experiments in prison reform and rehabilitation. Its protagonists and conspiracy are fictional, but the setting reflects the legal and institutional barriers faced by women entering finance and public life.
