Jim is a young British merchant officer whose heroic self-image collapses when the pilgrim ship Patna appears to be sinking. He abandons the vessel with its senior officers, only to learn that it remained afloat and that its hundreds of passengers survived. A public inquiry takes away his certificate and fixes him in the maritime world as the man who deserted his post, forcing him through a succession of jobs in Asian ports.

Marlow eventually helps Jim begin again in the remote settlement of Patusan, where he becomes a trusted leader and wins the love of Jewel. His restored honour remains vulnerable, however, when the pirate Gentleman Brown arrives and exploits Jim’s belief that another disgraced man can be treated mercifully. The novel follows the consequences of that decision and asks whether moral failure can be redeemed through later courage, responsibility and sacrifice.
