High Lonesome

by Louis L’Amour

First published 1962

4.3(2,994)

Considine and Pete Runyon were once close friends and both loved the same woman. Runyon married her and became a sheriff; Considine drifted into outlawry. Years later Considine is planning a bank robbery at Obaro with a small gang when events bring him back into conflict with the man whose life took the path he might have chosen for himself.

The robbery places more than money at stake. Considine has to judge the loyalty of his companions and confront the consequences of a life built around violence, while Runyon must deal with an outlaw he knows too well to treat as a stranger. The novel turns a pursuit through isolated western country into a story about friendship, regret and whether a man can change direction after his reputation has already fixed him in other people's minds.
