Phase

First United Front, 1923–1927

1923–1927 CE

The First United Front brought the Kuomintang and the young Chinese Communist Party into cooperation under a programme of national reunification. Soviet advisers helped reorganise the Kuomintang, while Communist members joined it as individuals and participated in labour, peasant and military mobilisation.

After Sun Yat-sen’s death, the alliance supported the Northern Expedition but became increasingly divided over control of mass movements and political authority. The split culminated in violent purges in 1927 and opened the long conflict between Nationalists and Communists.

The Emperor’s Bones follows characters moving through the alliance’s political networks, including Comintern advisers, underground organisers and Nationalist forces whose cooperation gives way to betrayal.
