Period
1991–present
The five former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan became independent in 1991. Their governments inherited Soviet borders, institutions and economic networks while promoting new national histories and negotiating the place of Islam, Russian language and older regional identities.
The transition was uneven, combining political authoritarianism, economic disruption, migration and, in Tajikistan, civil war. Travel writing such as Colin Thubron’s The Lost Heart of Asia and Shadow of the Silk Road records the early post-Soviet landscape while setting it against the region’s much older history of caravan trade and conquest.
