Battle
21 February 1849
The Battle of Gujrat was fought on 21 February 1849 after the capture of Multan allowed heavy guns and reinforcements to join Hugh Gough. Sikh forces under Sher Singh and Chattar Singh prepared positions east of the Chenab.
Gough opened with a prolonged artillery bombardment before advancing his infantry and cavalry. The Sikh army was driven from its positions and pursued as it withdrew towards the north-west.
The defeat led to the surrender of the principal Sikh forces in March and removed the final military obstacle to annexation of the Punjab.
