An Lushan Rebellion

The An Lushan Rebellion began in 755 when the general An Lushan rebelled against the Tang Dynasty. The conflict devastated northern China, captured capitals and caused enormous loss of life. Though the Tang survived, its power was permanently weakened.

It mattered because it marked a major turning point from Tang confidence to fragmentation and military decentralisation. The rebellion creates fiction settings of court crisis, flight, divided loyalties, ruined cities and soldiers caught between commanders. It is especially useful for novels about imperial decline beneath a brilliant cultural surface.
