First Indochina War

1946–1954

The First Indochina War began after the Second World War as France attempted to restore colonial authority in Indochina and the Việt Minh, led by Hồ Chí Minh, pursued Vietnamese independence. Fighting developed from urban clashes and guerrilla warfare into a larger conventional conflict involving French Union forces, Vietnamese nationalists and increasing Cold War support from outside powers.

By the early 1950s the Việt Minh could field larger formations under Võ Nguyên Giáp while France relied heavily on mobile forces, fortified positions and locally recruited troops. The decisive French defeat at Điện Biên Phủ in 1954 was followed by the Geneva agreements, which ended the war and temporarily divided Vietnam while accelerating the end of French rule in the region.

This context suits fiction about French soldiers in Indochina, Việt Minh resistance, captivity, counterinsurgency and the military culture produced by colonial defeat. Jean Lartéguy’s The Centurions uses the end of the war and the experience of French prisoners as the starting point for its later examination of Algeria.
